Thursday - May 5: Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area

We took a ride around the lake on a very colorful pink boat that I think was named the Dragon Yacht. The area is a tourist attraction and has much history. For those who know me well, this was one of the most relaxing parts of the trip so far. Any time I get to go on the open water and see a great sunset -- it is all good in my opinion!

Sun Moon Lake is where the President visits for 4 months of the year. The Palace is amazing, complete with a gazebo at the waters edge. The unique feature is the foundation of the gazebo is actually a guard station to protect the President and his guests as they relax and enjoy the view. We docked and hiked up the hill to see the landmark spot.

Next stop was the visitors center. This reminded me of the National Lakeshore Tour of Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan. The Facility was incredible. As you walked up to the center, there was a signed posted by a very shallow water feature that cautioned about not stepping in the water.
CAUTION: Beware of Pond.  Really???

1st Glimpse of The Pond
We all laughed about the warning - until we walked further and saw an endless water feature overlooking Sun Moon Lake. It was breathtaking to say the least. I also loved the fact they used two boat as flower pots - the flowers adorning the boats were beautiful. When I get back home, maybe Bill will be willing to let me do some work on the 44334 in Bay City!
Ahhh.....The Pond!
Pond Side!

We stayed at the Sun Moon Lake Youth Activity Center. The facility was very clean and the grounds were beautiful. The rooms each had 4 single beds and the bathrooms were set up to accommodate 4 guests. Again, some more ideas for renovating Church Camp in Manistee!
